Therapeutic Role of Drama for
Social Change and Resistance
TALKS BY RAVINDRA RANASINHA
Ravindra Ranasinha, noted Sri Lankan drama therapist, dramatist, writer, thinker and activist will deliver talks on the above topic as per the schedule given below. These will be interactive sessions open to those keen on learning to make drama a catalytic tool.
Thu, October 10, 2013
10 a.m. St Albert’s College, Ernakulam, Kerala, India
2 p.m. UC College, Aluva, Kerala, India
Fri, October 11, 2013
10 a.m. Christian College, Chengannur, Kerala, India
2 p.m. CMS College, Kottayam, Kerala, India
The above programmes are coordinated by Prof Appu John, Friends of Tibet, India.
Ravindra Ranasinha will be accompanied by Mr. C. A. Kallianpore, Rtd. Central Govt. Official and political analyst and Mr. Suresh Babu, holistic health researcher.
Ravindra Ranasinha wears many hats. He is a drama therapist, dramatist, journalist, sociologist, educationist and a social worker. He writes profusely on the current political situation in Sri Lanka, highlighting the multicultural aspect of the society, to promote harmony and co-existence amidst its diversity.
Ranasinha’s thinking is Post Modernist; his commentaries on the socio-political situation are frank and fearless. A keen observer of the many propagandist projects executed by the Sri Lankan State to subjugate the masses and lull them into accepting the current fascist regime, he regularly voices his discomfort against the ‘ideological warfare’ as he calls it. Heavily influenced by the Frankfurt school, Walter Benjamin’s writings have had a strong influence over Ranasinha’s Neo-Marxist outlook towards life. He has translated Benjamin’s ‘Author as Producer’ and ‘Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction’ enriching the Sinhala literature on art criticism. Other translated books include Michel Foucault (History of Sexuality) and Simone de Beauvoir (Second Sex).
Currently making a substantial contribution to develop the field of Drama Therapy in Sri Lanka, his holistic approach has helped many to sustain their mental well-being. His book ‘Dramatherapy in Sri Lanka’ is a pioneering document that empowers people to seek alternatives to enhance their wellness. Ravindra extends his activities to global arena by being a social activist attached to the Friends of Tibet supporting the cause of the Tibetans to free themselves from all repression that is meted out by the Chinese authorities. He can be reached at: ravindra.ranasinha@friendsoftibet.org
“Ravindra deserves the highest accolades for this pioneering and ground- breaking work on dramatherapy.”
Rev Fr Mervyn Fernando, Educationist
“Ranasinha is well aware of the horrors of war and the way our people from both sides of the ethnic divide suffered as a result of our prolonged and senseless conflict. Certainly, he has worked devotedly to help heal the scarred minds of both children and adults who have been pursued by the remorseless furies of terror, bereavement, bloodshed and brutality.”
Gaston de Rosayro, Sri Lankan Writer
